The studio was added to the rear of an existing residential property in Charlottesville, VA. Avid bikers, the clients goals were to create a workshop for repairing and maintaining their bikes, a small office, and an apartment on the second level for guests and their adult age children to stay. The typology and roof form was dictated by optimizing solar gain on roof mounted solar panels. With its material choices and fenestration the studio is meant to defer to the primary house when viewed from the front, while becoming more expressive when encountered from the rear yard.
